Every year Megaphone vendors try to see who can come up with the best sales pitch for the magazine. Vendors put their best sales pitch forward and then vote on their favourite one. The winning vendor then gets to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at a Vancouver Canadians baseball game!

This year we’re opening up the contest to our customers as well. Please vote on your favourite pitch, and feel free to offer a sales pitch you think would help Megaphone vendors sell the magazine on the streets of Vancouver.

One lucky voter will win 2 free tickets for the Monday, July 22nd Canadians game and get to join Megaphone vendors and volunteers as we cheer on the winning vendor. We’ll also throw in 2 Megaphone baseball caps.

Our homeless and low-income vendors buy copies of Megaphone for 75 cents and sell them on the street for $2 or more. They set their own hours, choose where they work, and some vendors are able to do this as a full-time job. Please pass it along to anyone you know who may be interested.

Services for vulnerable Downtown Eastside renters and survival sex workers will continue and even expand thanks to two new grants from the City of Vancouver.

On May 28, the city approved a $400,000 grant to WISH for expanding their office spaces at 330 Alexander St. and $8,000 for the Residential Tenancy Branch to remain open at Aboriginal Community Career Employment Services Society (ACCESS) at 390 Main St.

“Council is strongly committed to protecting vulnerable residents in the Downtown Eastside and supporting low-income renters,” said Mayor Gregor Robertson in a press release. “These two grants reflect the city’s continued resolve to improve safety for women in the Downtown Eastside and help address challenges with affordable rental housing.”

WISH already offers services for about 400 vulnerable sex workers at 330 Alexander St., but will be moving their administrative services, currently located on West Pender, to other offices in the city-owned building. The move means the non-profit organization will no longer be paying rent and can put more money towards programming.

“We don’t pay rent to the city for that building, we have a long-term lease on it. They’ve been really generous with us,” said Kate Gibson, executive director of WISH, adding they have a lease until 2018 and the option of two five-year renewals.

“It just makes us that much more secure and sustainable.”

The grant is in addition to another $50,000 grant the city provides for WISH’s Mobile Access Project van, providing services to survival sex workers on the streets. The city press release notes financial support for WISH fulfills some of the recommendations of the city’s Sex Trade Task Force and the Missing Women Commission of Inquiry.

The $8,000 for the Residential Tenancy Branch (RTB) at 390 Main St. will help continue a six-year partnership between RTB and ACCESS to serve residents of the Downtown Eastside. The money will come from the City’s Street Homelessness budget.

..a bit of nostalgia for Vancouverites, Found these in an odd place behind a skytrain station. The Canucks tickets for $8.99 ad probably came out circa 1986 and the opening of the Columbia station was 1990.

I think that’s Kirk Mclean, so it must be from ‘88 or later, if they’re using an action shot. Brodeur was still the starter in ‘86-‘87.

Also, these are both cool as Hell.

Hundreds of women join RCMP harassment lawsuit:

Hundreds of current and former female Mounties have come forward from across Canada to join a class-action lawsuit alleging harassment within the ranks of the RCMP.

Lawyers expected dozens of women to contact them with allegations after Janet Merlo, a 19-year veteran of the force, filed suit in March but attorney Jason Murray said Monday that more than 200 people have called his firm in Vancouver.

“It’s a significant number. It says to us there’s a significant problem that people feel has happened within the RCMP with respect to how women are treated,” Murray said in an interview.

And more people are expected to join the class action.

“We’re still hearing from women who either are currently members of the RCMP or who have retired or left the force in other ways,” Murray said. “On a week-to-week basis we’re hearing from people coming forward who have complaints about how they feel they were treated when they were with the RCMP.”
